    It is then that you realize.

    You have no hat.

    This isn't good. You look like a out-of-towner, like one of those coach-potato type of guys who watches the game only when there's nothing better on, like a bloody fairweather fan! You must have a hat. In desperation, you dive into the nearest vending booth to hide from the scrutinizing eye of the public.

    You land on the floor and look up through pleading eyes at the face of the salesperson, hoping he will not kick you in the ribs for having no hat. He does not. In fact, as he helps you to your feet and starts talking to you, he seems to be rather pleased to find that you are in such dire need of something he is just as desperate to sell.

    He starts showing you his best hats. You see one like the one pictured at left- and it's love at first sight. And then you see the price tag. Suddenly you begin to understand that age-old tention between want and need, between true love and painful seperation, between a hat and the hard earned money in your pocket.

    "Dude," you say, "I can't spend that much!"

    "I told you, it's $35 dollars, take it or leave it," the sales man replies, with the smoothest of smiles. Suddenly you realize what is going on. Your eyes narrow, and you step closer to the cruel sales person.

    "I know what you're trying to do," you hiss, venom dripping in your voice. "You know how much I need this hat, so you're selling it to me for an outragous price and expecting me to blindly slap down my money! It's like healthcare, like auto insurance- like surgery for a dying family pet. I'm not paying $35 for this hat, and that's final!" You stamp your foot down, feeling remarkably brave and powerful.

    "No, Sir," the sales man replies, "That's just the price of the hat. Everyone has to pay as much as you."

    Infuriated now, you throw the hat on the floor and start jumping on it. A tad immature, perhaps- but it gets the message across. It is then that you notice the security officer standing on the other side of the counter.

    "Excuse me," he says, looking very threatening, "Are you intending to pay for that hat?"

    "Yes, sir," you mutter, keeping your eyes downcast. And when the officer doesn't walk away like you hoped, you reluctantly reach into your walet and hand over the cash.

    Later that day you get home with your dirty, torn Mariners hat, and this email is waiting for you from your buddy Frank:

    Infinite Pi? I’m only, like, the biggest fan ever!

    Well, Doug really started it out. He was playing out of his garage with Randy, and they decided they wanted to be called “Three And One Seventh”. And at first, it was all irrational, you know, two guys with a name like that, everyone was “Whoa! Crazy!” But after a while it started to get stupid. So they changed the name to “Golden Ratio”.

    That’s when Ty came in on the drums. And they started going more acid house, you know, like the KLF. They met Ricky at a show, and he was playing keyboards for “Sixteenth Letter” out of Florida. Ricky had his own keyboards and Doug really liked that. So Ricky joined and they started recording as “Osmotic Pressure”.

    But Randy started getting disillusioned with everything, because it wasn’t pure enough. So he took a job at a gas station and started studying classical styles. Everybody’s still friends, you know, no hard feelings. They hired Mike to take his place, and he can shred, even though us real fans don’t think he was ever as good as Randy. Man, Randy was awesome! Any real fans still hope he comes back for a reunion tour one day.

    Anyway, with Mike, they became “Profit And The Inflation Rate” and they started getting attention. If it wasn’t for Ty’s overdose, that band would have probably gone on forever. I’ve got their twelve inch and they would have been huge on MTV.

    Then, as we all know, Doug and Mike and Ricky formed “Infinite Pi”. And they’re still playin’ even now, like they can’t stop. Ricky even has that side project with Randy and Bill Laswell called “Twenty Two Sevenths”. But that’s jazz or something and no one cares.
